This week I am super excited to be featuring Angela who created her own interior design business; Three Interiors, as part of my Parents in Business series.
Here Angela shares with us her passion for home interiors, and how creating a beautiful yet functional home for her clients is her vision. Angela manages to juggle work around her 3 year old daughter, and I’ve loved hearing how Angela is strict with her time, yet also values that there is a lot of hard work when setting up, running your own business and meeting your client deadlines.
I would love for you to have a read of Angela’s business story below. I really like her tip of using maternity leave to start paving the way for your own business (if that’s something you want to do).
Tell me a little bit about you, your background, and your business?
I’ve had two main careers and businesses up to this point. One is recruitment where I worked for around 7 years and had my own business. The other is interior design where I have worked for around 20 years now, always being self employed. Interiors is really my passion. I had to be brave and make the leap from a very successful and lucrative recruitment business into working for myself and starting an interior design business from scratch. I’m a very big believer in not giving up on things. If you truly want something, you’ll find a way to make it happen! My background in recruitment sales definitely helped me when I set up on my own as an interior designer. I was very used to cold calling businesses which is what I did to get started, calling property developers to work with them. I then opened a showroom and picked up more residential work that way.
What motivated you to set up your own business?
I had an interiors business years previously that involved staff and a showroom and lots of overheads. This time I wanted it to be flexible around my daughter who was 3 at the time (hence one of the reasons my company name is Three Interiors!) and to not have the stress of managing staff as well as large, time consuming projects. Essentially, I wanted to be more agile and open to change which I feel is more achievable if you fly solo. I work with lots of people on a subcontract basis which suits me.
I’ve always been obsessed with home. It fascinates me how people use their homes and the impact that good design can have on people’s lives. I LOVE giving my clients beautiful, functional homes that enhance their lives.
How do you balance or juggle your business around family commitments?
I’m super strict with my time and I’m really organised. That’s a complete lie, I wing it. A LOT. What can I say, I’m a creative! I have to be organised with client projects but I definitely wouldn’t get a 10/10 for my parenting organisation! Joking aside, I try and get a balance. I finish for school pick up time 3 days a week and I very rarely work weekends.
What do you view as your biggest success since setting up your business?
I’ve designed a life that suits me pretty much perfectly. I have flexibility, I’m my own boss, I’m in charge of my own destiny and of how big or small I want to play in my business. I deem that a definite success.
What are your top tips for anyone who is thinking about setting up their own business?
If you can, start it as a side hustle before maternity leave. Then you can work on it more when the baby is little and see if your idea will grow into a fully fledged business. And be prepared to work harder than you ever did for someone else, but I promise it’s so worth it!
