Parents in Business featuring Mojo Yard

This week I’m delighted to introduce Anja and Billie who created and set-up Mojo Yard to my Parents in Business series. Wow this sounds like an amazing business in North London, a place where mums can meet new mums, and where you can have a yoga session at the same time. This is just the supportive environment that new parents need, and is what Anja and Billie set out to achieve when they set-up Mojo Yard.

It is such a pleasure to feature both Anja and Billie on the blog. Their story rings true of so many other stories I’ve heard, where they wanted to set-up a business that worked around their family and is based on something that they truly believe in. I love how one of their factors for success is mums getting to know new mums. Sounds perfect to me! So have a read of their business story below and see how Mojo Yard can help you if you’re North London based.

Tell me a little bit about you, your background, and your business?

We’re Billie and Anja two mums born and bred in North London. We’ve been close friends since we were teenagers and between us have three children. Billie has Rudi, 3 and Rafi one and I’ve got Lila who is exactly one month older than Rafi – we like to refer to them as the twins! Our other baby is Mojo Yard, which we set up together on mat leave last year.

Since having kids Billie, a yoga instructor and massage therapist, wanted to specialise in mum and baby health and wellbeing. After the birth of my daughter, I was also looking for a career change and shared Billie’s passion for yoga, but am nowhere near as bendy, so with my background in telly and PR we thought we could create something special.

Mojo Yard brings together yoga, massage and support for new parents. We offer a range of classes, in North London, including pregnancy and postnatal yoga as well as Baby Massage.

What were your motivations for setting up your business?

Mojo Yard is completely aimed at mums like us.

There’s so much support when you’re pregnant and then it completely tails off when the baby arrives and for many, including us, that’s when you need it the most.

As mums we know first hand how important it is to find activities to do with your children but equally how vital it is to find other like minded local parents to share experiences with, as it can often be a very lonely time.  It’s no surprise that increasing numbers of people living in social isolation are stay at home mums and we wanted to change that.

So we’ve made sure there’s a big social side to all our classes and always encourage parents to stay behind to have a cup of tea and chat to others also knee deep in life with a little one.

As well as helping parents build their support network and improve their wellbeing we look after their physical health too, with Billie’s specialist knowledge of postnatal recovery. Whether your strengthening your pelvic floor, rebuilding your core or bonding with your baby – Billie’s got it covered.

How do you balance the business around your family and childcare?

Before babies both our working hours were crazy and not conducive to looking after little people, so we really wanted that to be at the heart of what we do. Having kids turned everything on its head. Yes we are mums supporting other parents but we also wanted to create something that neatly fits into our family life too… it’s definitely not 9-5am and we have a big appreciation for the fact that we are mainly working with new parents who sometimes only make decisions about what they’re doing the next day whilst feeding their babies at 2am, but we try our best to work daytime hours or around our family’s needs.

Since setting up your business what has been your biggest success to date?

Billie is the founder of pop up yoga on London’s iconic Tower Bridge. It was voted one of the top 10 things to do in London and there is no experience quite like it.

We also recently did a pregnancy and postnatal event with Sweaty Betty which sold out and went really well. It was great to collaborate with a brand that we love and promotes female empowerment. We also received lots of great feedback from all the mums and mums to be who came along to the event.

But for us our biggest success is bumping into parents who have made new friends through Mojo Yard and seeing that connection continue outside our classes.

What’s your top tip for anyone who is thinking about setting up their own business?

Just do it! We spent months procrastinating about what we should be but ultimately until we tested the market we didn’t know.

Grow at a speed that feels manageable for you and your family. It doesn’t need to be the finished article overnight.

Setting up Mojo Yard has been a steep learning curve but in many ways starting your own business is very much like looking after a newborn. Unpredictable and tiring but also extremely rewarding!

Thank you so much Billie and Anja for letting me feature you on my blog, and all the best for the future!
