6 Reasons to love working from home - Claire Moran Designs
Earlier this year I made the transition from working in a busy London advertising agency to working at home. Part of the reason for that was to have greater flexibility around my daughter’s childcare and so that I could see her a lot more. I definitely do not miss agency life, just like I don’t miss the plush reception desk or fancy reception chairs, or the fun break-out areas. But I do miss the people, the banter and the beers at 4pm on a Friday. Working in an office and working at home are two very different beasts, mainly because there is so much more interaction when working in an office. Saying that I don’t miss the interaction at home, in fact I love it, and there are so many reasons to love working from home. You’re in control of the tea and biscuits. You can make as many cups of tea as like, without feeling like you’re over-doing it, or having to make a huge round of tea for the entire team every time you go to the kitchen. You’re working on your own time. I love being able to control the hours and days that I work around childcare. I am effectively my own boss at the moment, as long as I get done what I need to by the deadline. You can have your own office room with luxurious office furniture that is styled to suit your home. I know that when we eventually move we hope to have an office, or just a space for a desk would be wonderful. It’s quiet. There’s no one constantly interrupting you, or getting distracted by something that’s going on across the office. I was always amazed at how much more work I completed at home than when I was working in an office, and now I plough through my to-do list on the days when the little one is in nursery. You’re not a spending a fortune on lunches. Instead it’s easy to eat last nights leftovers, or make a quick sandwich, instead of forking out £7 – £8 a day on a burrito or a Katsu Curry. It’s great for the bank balance, and also helps to keep the weight off too. Lastly if you get bored of sitting somewhere in your house, you can easily move desks to the sofa, the kitchen table or even outside if it’s a nice day. See it as hot-desking in your own home. I particularly like these Penny chairs they would look nice in a bay window or in a suitably stylish kitchen extension. So those are my top 6 reasons why it’s great to work from home, and not in a office. They both have their advantages and disadvantages, but from a productivity angle I definitely achieve more, although it can be lonely with limited human interaction. However being a blogger and training to be a social media manager means that I am never more than a click from somebody. You can find out a couple more productivity hacks in this recent Calibre blog post. What’s your opinion on people who work from home? Or are you WAHM like me.
