Why it is so important to check your car tyres

This is a sponsored post.

Having kids and owning a car means one thing. Safety. My car needs to be safe and roadworthy to get my children, my husband and I from A to B without any hiccups along the way and to avoid any car damage. This is especially true as we approach the holidays where I know that we will be doing a lot of travelling on the road, and I’m sure that you will also be doing the same.

When it comes to car safety the number one area of priority for us to have in full working order all the time are our car tyres. We will be travelling just under 1,000 miles this Christmas, and that is a lot of road for our tyres to be spinning around on.

This is why it is so important that we check our car tyres before we set off on our travels, and you should also do the same. Here’s how we will be doing this and how you can do it too.

  • First of all we will check that we have set the correct tyre pressure. This Christmas it is inevitable that we will be carrying a lot more than our usual trips which is why it is more important than ever to make sure that we have set our tyres to the correct pressure. We will do this by reading the manual or the inside of the petrol cap which will tell us what the tyre pressure needs to be based on the number people and luggage. We will then check the tyre pressure at home or at a petrol station, and if it’s over or under inflated we can release some air or top up our tyres.
  • Secondly we will check that our tyres treads are to the correct depth. They should be at least 1.6mm. One way we do this is to insert a 20p coin into the main grooves across the centre of our tyres. If the rim of the coin is close to being visible or is visible then our tyres are probably illegal and will need to be changed. We find it best to complete this check every couple of months or after we have made a long journey.
  • Lastly we will check that there are no lumps or bumps in our tyres before setting off. This is really simple for us to do and will we do this at home by walking around our car and observing the tyres.

Without making these vital checks every couple of months, I dread to think what would happen, sorry to scare you, but you do hear of tyre blow outs at 70mph on the motorway, and I really wouldn’t like to be stranded on the hard shoulder during the Christmas holidays in potentially not so nice weather conditions.

So before you set off on your merry way this Christmas, spend time checking your car tyres (it honestly doesn’t take long). If you need to replace any Ossett Tyre House stores good quality branded tyres for your car. Buy tyres in Wakefield from them, I guarantee they will not disappoint you.
