Week in Wales: Llanbedrog and Tenby

Instead of writing a weekly highlight post this week, I’m going to write about our week in Wales. Every year my husband and I spend a week in Wales, where we divide our time between Llanbedrog in the North, and Tenby in the South. This year was a little different, well actually it was very different as we had a little one in tow, usually we would spend our time having lie ins, long breakfasts, reading, going to the pub, and having evenings out.

We decided to split the week by spending 4 days in Llanbedrog, and 3 days in Tenby, with our journey to Wales starting very early on a Saturday morning to beat the traffic. My pack list came in handy as we were ready to leave at 6am! We always try to leave early as getting across London to the motorways can take an hour, and in traffic much longer. The journey was going really well until our little one was sick all over herself, her car seat, the actual car seat, and my iPad. We put it down to a one-off and stopped at the Rhug Farm Estate in Denbighshire for a spot of lunch. We had planned to stop here, as we knew that they did really good burgers and it is a lovely place to stop instead of the random petrol stations, as there really aren’t many service stations once you are on the winding welsh roads. I enjoyed a lovely Rib Burger and my husband had a steak sandwich. The baby change facilities were also excellent for sorting out a sickly baby.

Thankfully as we left London early we eventually got to a sunny  and beautiful Llanbedrog in the afternoon, allowing us to spend time walking on the beach and visiting the local pub for a pint in the sunshine. It’s such a relief to do this after travelling for 8 hours.

The next day we visited Beddgelert which is a lovely village nestled in the foot of the Snowdonia National Park. It is lovely here, made even more lovely by the weather. Here we enjoyed lunch at a place called Hebog outside by the river, before going on a longish walk to allow our little one to sleep. We visited Gelerts Grave, walked along the river which is ideally paved for a buggy, and then had a quick snoop around Beddgelert. We also treated to ourselves to an ice-cream as it was such a beautiful day.

During out time in Llanbedrog we were fortunate to be visited by my husband’s parents for 2 days of our stay, it was great to see them and brilliant for them to spend time with our little one. She really enjoyed the company of her grandparents to read her stories, and play games with her. She was also much better being in the company of family who she only sees every now and then, as previously it has taken a while for her to warm to people, which makes me feel a little sad especially as family have not seen our daughter that much. We had a really wet day this day, so this was perfect for playing games and drinking tea and eating cake at the house!

On our last day in North Wales, we visited Abersoch a short drive away. Luckily the sun was shining again today, allowing us to enjoy a stroll along the beach, seeing the beach huts before having our lunch our at Zinc restaurant, where the food was gorgeous. That evening once my husbands parents had left we spent the evening relaxing, having dinner and watching TV, how our lives have changed now that we have a little one asleep downstairs.

At the end of stay in Llanbedrog we packed up our things again, and hit the road from North to South. This drive is absolutely stunning, as a lot of it threads down the coast of Wales, mostly on single carriageway roads weaving in and out of mountain ranges, hills and coastal roads. We think our daughter suffers from travel sickness, as she was sick again, all over herself, her car seat, and the car seat. As I said earlier there are only small petrol stations to stop out, luckily my objective to find a McDonalds was met, allowing us to sort out little one and for us to eat too.

On arriving in Tenby we got unpacked and got ourselves sorted before heading out for a walk. I keep mentioning the weather, but it was so lovely and the sun was shining. As usual our walk ended up with a late afternoon drink, before heading back to sort out little ones dinner.

The next two days followed the same pattern we would go on a buggy friendly walk, and have a pub lunch. We visited Saundersfoot, walking along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path through the cliff tunnels to Wiseman’s Bridge, to enjoy lunch in the sunshine (did I mention the sunshine and lunch) of sausage and chips in a basket at the Wiseman’s Bridge Inn. Sounds a bit random, but it was just what we needed.

The next day we used our National Trust Membership to visit the Stackpole Estate, this is a lovely area taking in Stackpole, Bosherton, Lily Ponds, Barafundle and Broad Haven Beach. We parked in the main car park, and walked down past to the Lily Ponds to the top of Broad Haven Beach, the entire walk was really buggy friendly which is highlighted on the National Trust map. Unfortunately the beach is very sandy, and not really suitable for the buggy so we had to make our way back to the car park once we had reached it. By the time lunch time came round the sun had come out, allowing us to enjoy lunch outside at the Stackpole Inn.

On our last day we decided to travel back to London in the evening, rather than spend the day travelling. The day was again beautiful and we didn’t want to spend this in the car, I was also curious how our little one would handle being in the car when she should be in bed. We spent our last day strolling around Tenby, getting a coffee and cup cake from Stowaway Coffee Shop which is a tiny place under the arches leading down to the harbour. The coffee is lovely, and we were tempted by the owner to purchase a cup cake, and I can say that they were delicious! We visited the Lifeboat station, and walked around the cannons, and once we had walked off our lunch we went for lunch at The Moorings a lovely small restaurant which I enjoyed steak and chips.

Our drive back to London was OK, the little one didn’t sleep as much as I had hoped, but at least she wasn’t sick. My conclusion on the sickness is that she is suffering from car sickness, as it was motorways virtually all the way home. It then took us about an hour to get her to settle in her cot once we got home.

We had a lovely week in Wales, if was so nice to spend a week away from London, soaking up the April sunshine and fresh air, and seeing my daughter enjoy the places in Pembrokeshire that I visited when I was younger and Gwynedd where my husband holidayed lots as a child.

Our little one has really changed this week – she’s now waving, rolling everywhere and is so much bigger!

Your holiday sounds lovely! The pics are fab too. Sounds so relaxing, and such a nice break as a family. My parents took me on my first holiday recently – it was very nice. My parents too can recall- with fondness – the pre-baby holidays of lie-ins and pub visits 😉 x

Oh I literally sighed as I read this post and looked at the pictures – really stunning photography and such beautiful calming landscapes. The one with the sun sparkling on the water – I literally felt I was there – beautiful. It really does make me sad that we don’t spend enough time enjoying what the UK has to offer. I’ve wanted to spend time on the beaches on Wales for years but never got around to booking anything – I’m definitely going to organise after reading this post. Thank you for sharing #KCACOL

It sounds like you had a lovely holiday! I was lucky enough to spend some time in Wales when I lived in Chester and really liked it, though I’ve never been to Tenby or Llanbedrog. Our ‘babymoon’ was to Anglesey and it was fabulous! #KCACOLS

I loved reading this! I am so in need of a trip like this soon…it sounds perfect! Gorgeous pictures and I’m glad you had a good time. Always lovely when family can pop in for a bit as well, we find it gives a lovely dimension to the trip and so nice for the baby. Sorry to hear about the car sickness…maybe it will ease as she gets older and taller and can see out and take note of her surroundings a bit more. I’m glad it wasn’t a bug though. Wave to your little one for me! Exciting changes! #bigpinklink

Thank you for your lovely comment Lucy! Always nice for the baby to see other people that her Mum and Dad, plus it gives us a bit of a break too. I’ll give the little one a wave from you 🙂 Claire x

We used to live in Gwynedd, a little further down though, and the Rhug was where we stopped if we ever went to north england. (True story; when I was younger and wanted to go clothes shopping, we would go to Chester for the day, a 4 hour round trip! As it was the nearest big shopping place!) Your photos are just stunning and you are making me crave those views! My daughter would also get car sick whenever we went back to visit. Touch wood, at 5, she seems to be a lot better. Thanks so much for linking up with us again! #bigpinklink

Ooh lovely it’s lovely there, isn’t it? I bet you’ve got lots of food memories of being in Wales? I don’t blame you for going all the way to Chester to shop, where else do you buy clothes from. I’m so pleased you like the photos, I have so many more. I’m so glad your daughter has out-grown the car sick stage, hopefully ours will too. Claire x

Sounds like a great week away..and how lucky you had nice weather grew up in Wales and you should know it’s very rare to get a whole week with no rain. Glad you had a nice time, this post has made me hungry xz #KCACOLS

    • The Pramshed

Ha ha, glad my post had that affect on you Wendy! We were so lucky with the weather, and you’re very lucky to have grown up in Wales. Thanks so much for reading and commenting on my post. Claire x

  • Tracey @ One Frazzled Mum

Your pictures are beautiful! I regularly holiday in North Wales yet I haven’t been to these places before tending to end up in the Prestatyn/Rhyl areas as we are only an hours drive away. I agree with you with the travel sickness, I suffer really bad as does Olivia and find we are much better on motorways than normal roads, I find it’s the slowing and speeding motions and roundabouts that set us off if that helps any?
Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday”

    • The Pramshed

Thanks Tracey for your lovely comments, you should drive a little further into Wales and see what the Llyn Peninsula is like. You’re lucky that you’re only an hours drive away, I wish we were that close. Yes the windy roads are too blame, I’m sure, maybe when she is forward facing it’ll be easier. I hope you have enjoyed co-hosting #KCACOLS this week, and I’ll be back next Sunday. Claire x

Thank you for your lovely comment Catie, I hope that one day you do get to visit Wales. It is truly beautiful, very varied, with so much to do. I really hope it isn’t travel sickness, we shall see the next time we go away. Thanks for having me at #FamilyFun. Claire x

It looks so gorgeous there, are there lots of sandy beaches? I hadn’t thought of Wales for a UK break, but I am going to take a look after reading your post and seeing your stunning photos. Travel sickness is horrible, hopefully it’s something that will pass in time # FamilyFun

    • The Pramshed

Thank you for reading and commenting, yes there are lots of sandy beaches in Wales – I would say probably all the way round. I hope you manage to have a holiday in Wales, it is truly beautiful. Thanks for reading and commenting. Claire x

  • whitecamellias

Wow! This place looks stunning and sounds like you had a great time. I love your photos. I have never been to Wales but now I definitely feel like I should put it on my list of places to visit. I think the kids would love exploring here. #Familyfun

Ooh I enjoyed reading this. I could just do with a holiday and your week sounded perfect. I am only really familiar with North Wales, having spent long lazy holidays on Shell Island between Harlech and Barmouth.

Your photos are beautiful and really made me feel like I was there.
Sorry to hear about the car sickness, I hope it is just one of those things.
