Essential Tips For First-Time London Visitors

One of the joys of living in the UK is that you don’t necessarily need to hop on a plane and head overseas when it comes to your holidays. You can stay in the country and choose from a wide range of experiences. You can explore the beauty of the Lake Districtthe Welsh countryside, or tour around the quaint and picturesque English villages. And then there are the cities, most notably London, which is rightly regarded as one of the world’s greatest destinations. If you’ve never experienced the capital before, then take a read below, where I’ve outlined some tips for making the most out of your trip.

When to Go

Like most destinations, there’s not just one version of London; there are many. The city is a different experience depending on whether you visit in winter or summer. When you decide to go will depend on your general preferences, but in general, the best times to go are just before Christmas, spring, and summer. Spring and summer have that easy vibe, and there’s a lot going on, while pre-Christmas sees magic in the air.

The Big Hitters

There’s so much stuff to do in London that you could realistically spend months there and still leave with things you haven’t done. Of the thousands of things to do, however, there are some that you can’t miss: these are what we’d call the big hitters, the London highlights that people travel from all over the world to experience. So what’s on the list? They’re all names that you’ll have heard of before: Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye. Hyde Park, The Tower of London. London is a gigantic city, but all of these highlights are conveniently within walking distance of one another.

London Living

There’s a reason why so many people choose to live in London despite the obvious drawbacks, and that’s because there are so many things happening. In the city, you can experience the best music, theatre, and cultural events, more or less on any night of the week. Indeed, there’s sometimes more going on a midweek evening in a single borough than most cities have going on all week. So make sure you’re keeping an eye on what’s happening, and get involved. It’s particularly recommended that you pick up some West End tickets, and see a show: they are among the best stage shows in the world. You’ll also want to check out the events listings websites to see what’s happening during your trip; there might just be something special.

Comfortable Shoes

Finally, remember to pack some comfortable shoes with you. A trip to London can be relaxing, but it’s not like you’re going to sit on a beach for a week. You’ll want to be up, active, and exploring the sights. So choose comfort over style: you’ll be thankful for it when you’re on the move.
