She walks at 17-months old

She walks

As the title says; She walks. Today our daughter took her first steps whilst we were playing chase the toy phone around the living room. Today was a proud mummy moment that nearly brought a tear to my eye.

For those of you who have been following my blog and Instagram Stories will know that I had many concerns a couple of months ago that at the age of 13-months our daughter was not walking independently. This concern was flagged to me by our nursery and at the time I didn’t think too much about it, she was only 13-months old and a Twitter pole I set revealed that it wasn’t too unusual for children to start walking at 15 or 16-months old.

Phew!

However we soon got to 17-months and our daughter was happily walking around the house with a toy walker and coasting the furniture. She just wouldn’t let go.

Well today was a success. We had been to the park earlier with some of my NCT friends and their children. Children who were walking confidently and running around. I wonder having seen these children splashing in puddles gave our daughter the encouragement and confidence that she needed to take her first steps tonight.

Who knows, or maybe she was just ready to show-off to us that she can do it.

Tonight was a proud moment for us. It goes to show that children develop at different rates. They achieve their milestones at different times, and it’s not always as simple as meeting a milestone on a list. Tomorrow I will enjoy telling the nursery that our daughter took her first unaided steps today.

Aww how lovely and what a proud mummy moment for you! My eldest didn’t take her first unaided steps until she was 21 months old. I was told by my community nurse that later walkers are more aware of being able to fall and can be slower to go from cruising to walking because of it. It is such a lovely moment when they finally have that confidence to let go and walk by themselves. #triballove

So lovely Little Miss could show you her new moves! It’s a tough one with the apparent milestones. Everyone’s different! Just like grown ups kids do their thing at their own pace (excuse the pun). Toddler’s first steps are always a biggie as it reminds us they’re now on the move ha ha! They’re unstoppable….Enjoy watching her other moves and grooves too. Can’t wait to see you next Saturday! X Sunita #fortheloveofBLOG

Yaaaay, one of the best proud mummy moments. Yep, those milestones can make you feel under pressure but every child is different and will do things when they are ready. I remember getting into a right tiz during a health care check when Oldest was a year old because they said she wasn’t crawling properly. She was crawling but more of a commando. They were talking about referrals and all sorts! Then a couple of weeks later she was crawling properly and then a week after that trying to walk. Just shows you! #fortheloveofBLOG

Yay! Such an exciting moment! I remember reading your previous post, I know lots of babies who started walking closer to 18months than 12. They’re all so different! #fortheloveofblog

  • Becky Clark

Awww well done! I think there’s a lot of pressure for children to hit their milestones but like adults we’re all so unique. It would be silly to expect everyone to achieve everything at the same time!
As my MIL would say “now you’ll need eyes in back of your head”

That’s lovely. All children are different. Thanks for reminding us of that. It’s so easy to compare to others, but they are individuals. I’m sure she’ll be running you ragged soon enough 🙂 #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Mrs Lighty

Yay! Go your little girl! I really do think that they do things that interest them first. If she was getting around fine with the walker and cruising, then she probably thought that she didn’t need to change that. It’s definitely a proud Mummy moment though! #fortheloveofBLOG

Well done to your little one! It seems it is the job of ‘health professionals’ to worry us about our child’s development. Good luck keeping up with her now 🙂

Yay! Such exciting times, she’ll be running before you know it 🙂 After reading your post about the nursery questioning her walking, it makes me thinking of you as ours sometimes mention Emma’s speech too. She hasn’t said a lot until 2 weeks back when she unleashed about 20 words over 3 days! Milestones are just guidelines and all kids do things in their own time 🙂 Thanks for hosting #fortheloveofBLOG x

Oh how lovely!!!! Im a complete believer in that kids all have their own development time and whilst some of our friends babies crawled at 8 months, Ben is yet to even try but I honestly think he will only walk due to his hatred of tummy time and love of standing (i can currently hold his hands and for a good few minutes he supports himself)
Glad your worries have been put to rest and you can go back to enjoying little lady without niggles in the back of your head #fortheloveofBLOG

Proud mummy moment! It’s so tough when folk remind you of when milestones are ‘usually’ achieved. Our babies will do what they want when they’re good and ready! #fortheloveofblog

Aww what a wonderful moment? – it’s up there with the best isn’t it?! My son didn’t walk until he was nearly 18 months -they all really do it at different stages don’t they! Oh and the questioning looks we got because he wasn’t walking were crazy!! #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Angela Watling

Whoop whoop! So please that she’s now finally found her confidence to move. I can appreciate the relief you are feeling; it’s stressful when your child seems to be behind on something. She’ll be sprinting around before you know it now. xx #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Kelly Edwards

Oh congratulations, such a big step (literally)! It’s one of those things that’s really important at the time and sometimes worrying if they aren’t seemingly moving at the same pace. They all get there in the end though. Let the fun begin!!

  • Briony

Yaaaaaay! How exciting. Despite knowing each kid is different it’s hard not to worry sometimes isn’t it. Before you know it there’ll be running and worse, climbing, to contend with and you’ll wonder why walking was a good thing. #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Lucy Grace

Hooray!! Awww, bless her, she did it! They really do develop at all different rates, and I reckon that they definitely take inspiration from their peers. Our son was a late walker too, and he decided to go for it after spending the day with my 3 year old nephew. I think he saw him tearing about the place and thought ‘I wanna do that!’. So he did. Enjoy your glory moment when telling the nursery. hehe! #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Nadine

Aww well done to your little one! It’s frustrating when people put a time on development as like you say, they’re all different. My friend’s little one is a day apart from mine and they have developed so so differently despite doing very similar things so it just shows #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Kiri

Aw that’s lovely, a very proud moment! They get there in their own time don’t they. Both my daughters were 14 months before they started walking but as soon as they took those first few steps it didn’t take long before they were running around. #fortheloveofblog

  • Kat

I think as mums it’s natural to compare your child to others and be a wee bit competitive (I def am) but they know their own minds and all develop differently. You got there so that’s the main thing – woo hoo! now to move all the breakables out of the way! xx #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Nicola

Yay! Lovely news! Every child is different and does things in their own good time. My brother didn’t talk until he was 4 years old. Everyone thought he must be deaf or have something else wrong with him…turned out he just couldn’t be bothered! My daughter couldn’t (and still can’t) do jigsaw puzzles in the same way most people do them. She can’t understand the concept of straight edges. My Mum was convinced that she was dyslexic but at 6 she now reads well ahead of her age and does puzzles from the middle outwards. It’s just the way she is. We know our children better than anyone! #fortheloveofblog

Awww yeayy! I have a few friends that have children that have waited 15/17 months to walk, but when they have their so strong and forward with their walking, no wobbly moments their was just tottering off. This is were the fun starts!!

  • Aleena Brown

Aww! Good for her! And I think it’s really important to highlight that all children are very different and do things in their own sweet time! No child fits perfectly into any given box, and here is proof! Have fun with the new mobility *wink wink*!! x

  • Peachy and her Mommy

That’s wonderful! You must be so very proud. Peachy is 13 and a half months and doesn’t walk by herself yet. She thinks about it but gets scared and backs out every time. I suspect her first time will be an accident where she forgets to hold on. I’m not too concerned about it. I’m more worried about her not talking yet. She says words like mommy and daddy but I don’t know if she really knows what they mean. She knows what milk is but refuses to say it. The only word she really knows is uh-oh. I hope she has a breakthrough soon. Her doctor wants her to know at least 3 words by her next appointment in March. #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Jaki

Ah how lovely! We were lucky enough to get our little ones first steps on film. I still watch it now. It seems like yesterday but he’s grown so so much since then. The little proud look on his face in the video is wonderful. So pleased for you. #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Sam - StressyMama

Yay. How exciting. Definitely one of the best proud mummy moments. I’ve spent so much time obsessing over milestones and wondering if there is something wrong that in the end I just had to tell myself to stop. My daughter is perfect and if it takes her a little bit longer to do things than what the guidelines say then it’s tough luck. Everyone is different and she will get there in her own time. #fortheloveofBLOG

  • ONE CLUELESS MUMMA

Ah hooray! Proud mummy moment and you’re daughter did it in her own time and at her own pace – go girl! We really shouldn’t compare children’s milestones but it’s so much easier said than done. #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Nursery Whines

Congratulations! I know all baby’s do things in their own time, but I know the feeling of that nagging doubt of, ‘why hasn’t she done it when all the other babies her age seem to be able to already?’. And now she’s off, everyone will tell you you’ll long for the day she stayed in one place. #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Jess

Yay this is awesome . You are so right that children do progress at their own rate . It’s great you have shared this with others . Thank you for having me co-host this week #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Manny - The Greenwich Mummy

Awwww congratulations to your little bubba! Their first walk is always such a special moment and one of those I would dread to miss! My little girl is trying to coast about and I hope I catch her first walk before I go back to work 🙂 #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Wendy

Wohoo! I bet it was such a proud moment for you 🙂 All babies are different and do things at different ages, your little one was just waiting for the perfect moment that’s all xx #fortheloveofblog

  • Maria

Ahhh well done little one and no wonder you are so proud! What a clever girl! My youngest was like this and although would walk if you held his hand and cruised he wouldn’t walk on his own properly until he was 17 months too! #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Emma

Awww yay!! That’s fantastic!!! It really does go to show they are all so different and develop at their own rate. It’s so nice though that you’re able to share this with so many people and put others minds at rest too. I bet you’ve had a fun filled weekend as she’s growing more confident…!!!! Enjoy! #fortheloveofBLOG x

  • Louise - Mummy Miller

Yay! I’m so pleased for you, it must be a weight off of your mind. I can imagine in your situation I would spend all my time watching and waiting and then worrying that it wasn’t happening. Some children take that little bit longer, and they’re then that bit more confident when they get going! #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Cherry at The Newby Tribe

What a lovely moment. It can be so easy to worry when other people’s children are ahead of ours, and I’ve spent so long thinking that my children are behind in speech or social skills, but they are catching up every day! #fortheloveofBLOG

  • Geraldine

Ahhh now the fun begins! There’s no stopping her now! It’s such a fun time. My daughter is now 3 and runs quicker than I can. Enjoy the little wobbles while you can catch her 🙂

  • Cathryn - Little Paper Swans

Yay! Great news. My little girl is now walking confidently a lot more by herself but up until last month 14 months she had no interest. She didn’t roll over until 9 months. People around us seemed concerned and the HV came back after her year check to make sure she was mobile. She had no intention of doing it before she did. She’s very much a her way or no way! We know them best.
