How to create an inspirational toddler room

Creating a proper room for our toddler is definitely at the forefront of my mind at the moment for two reasons. The first is that our daughter is no longer a baby, her nursery feels a little too young for her, and also the sides will be coming off the cot soon. Secondly we are in the process of moving house (fingers crossed) where she will have a much larger room, which will give us a new blank canvas to work with, so my dream is to create an inspirational toddler room for her.

Her current room is pretty small, and I would love a larger space where she can play, store her toys, and maybe even invite her friends one day. I’ve been looking at toddler room ideas on Pinterest, and I’ve already put her ideal room together in my head, I just need the house to go with it now.

Here’s how we would create the room

  • The colour would be a neutral colour, as I’m not a huge fan of pinks or blues on the walls. Currently her room is a light grey, and I think that we would opt for something similar. It’s so versatile, and tends to go with everything.
  • If we had a window in the room we would choose long ceiling to floor curtains, as they really help to complete a room, and look great against a huge Victorian window.
  • Or if we are lucky enough to have a loft room we would definitely need black-out blinds to stop the early morning sunlight waking her, and for this we would choose Velux windows blinds as I love their colours and range of designs.
  • I’ve always loved white furniture, and her current bedroom includes a white tall chest of drawers, white shelving unit and white cotbed. We would continue with the white furniture by investing in a white wardrobe, and some other bits and pieces.
  • For bedding I would let my daughter pick this, as I’ve read on numerous other blogs that it’s better for your child to choose their bedding when you either take the sides of the cot, or move them into a single bed. This gives them a sense of ownership and pride, and will hopefully encourage them to stay in it.
  • There are so many shelving solutions that I would consider, including buying spice racks and painting these white to store books on the wall. This is a great way for your child to see all their books, rather than just the spine.
  • I would love to create a picture or peg wall where her artwork from nursery can be framed or pegged. This would make such a change from it being stuffed into a drawer once we’ve got home.
  • There are so many other little things that I would love to do including purchasing a wigwam tent, getting her a small desk where she can draw or read, and have a huge wooden dolls house.
  • Lastly lighting, it would be such a nice touch to have some fairy lights or soft coloured lights scattered around her room, making it feel cosy and a place where she can enjoy spending time.

I’d not thought of doing Lily’s room in a neutral colour but from that image it really works. Accessories are easily changed then aren’t they. We are hopefully doing Lily’s room soon. Velux blinds are fab! x

We went for neutral walls and white furniture too. It makes it so much easier and cheaper if you want to update the room theme as you only have to change the accessories and not completely repaint. We currently have an orange zoo theme. Lots of animals and bright colours. It sounds awful but we think it looks fab. #fortheloveofblog

I can’t wait until we’re no longer renters and can actually decorate my daughter’s room properly. We’ve currently decorated with wall stickers because they really liven up the room but can be easily taken off without damaging the walls. #fortheloveofBLOG

I love what you would choose to create a toddlers room. I love the neutral paint, white furniture, and long curtains. I haven’t been able to set up a toddler’s room yet, but I hope to one day. #fortheloveofBLOG

Neutral colours are a must I say. My big, little boy’s bedroom is such a pale grey its nearly white. His bed is grey and units, I revamped old furniture with blue chalk paint. I love it and he does too. It’s easy to change the bedding when ever we get fed up. I’m planning a reading corner now as he loves his books.

Ive absolutely loved designing my daughters room, its my favourte room in the house. I have lots of little handmade items and a little reading corner for her to chill with cushions and books. I hope the move goes well x

Her room was a nursery when we moved in and it’s painted yellow. It’s not what I would choose but I think I’m going to leave it for now as very soon she’ll be able to tell us what she wants! If I could choose it would be white with blush pink, gold and grey highlights

We went with a egg shell blue colour for the nursery, but now as the baby is a little toddler, I am beginning to feel that her room is slowly looking “too young” for her. Some great tips!

This is my favourite thing to think about when we talk about moving house! I can’t wait to give Amelia a bigger bedroom and have it all lovely! Pinterest is my favourite place for ideas!! 🙂

Good luck with the move! exciting! #fortheloveofBLOG

We are in the process of hopefully moving house too and I am thinking about what we will do to J’s new bedroom. It is so exciting and yet I want to get it right so it is a bit overwhelming too! I have just followed your board so I hope I can see some great inspiration there. I want to make some sort of art wall (at the moment the good pieces are blu tacked up) and a tenth area as a chill out book corner with maybe a bean bag or floor cushions. His room is going to be larger, but not huge so no big furniture still. #fortheloveofBLOG

Our daughters’ shared room reflects our interest in nature. You can see it on my blog if you like. I think it will be loved for a long time. #fortheloveofBLOG

Sorry for the late comment.. life has been super crazy!!! =[
This post is being bookmarked as we’re looking to move next year and im needing inspiration for Bens new room. right now its literally a cot, kid wardrobe and plastic draws as its so small. im praying he gets a huge room where i can go crazy and then at least all his toys will be out from our front room!!!
He currently has a handpainted picture of Mickey from fantasia with his name in Disney font above the picture (courtesy of Hubbys dad) and next one is possibly Peppa Pig or paw patrol. Though I love the idea of a massive disney wall. and a massive character rug with a chair next to a bookcase full of fairytales for Ben to read. But more importantly, floor space for him to dance and to rock out with his instruments! If only I wsa a millionaire!!! #fortheloveofBLOG

    Great post!
    I love these ideas!
The wonders of great artwork! Walls adorned with gallery-style wall decor are popping up, and the best part of this fun trend is that it celebrates all styles of art and doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
