A new beginning

2017 is a big year for me, and it will be a new beginning. A year that I am excited about, and a year that I am also quite scared about. After being back at work for 9 months after maternity leave I made a crazy decision a couple of weeks ago to leave my current job as a Senior Project Manager in a London advertising agency. This was no easy decision especially after building my career there, and being in my current workplace for nearly 10 years! A small part of me thinks that I’m mad, which hits me every now again. Whereas the other part of me is really excited about what the future will bring.

So what does the future bring. Two things: The blog and a Digital Mums course. Having had a year off on maternity leave I could say that I found my happy. I loved every minute of it including setting up my blog. It has opened so many doors for me, and made me see life and my career a little differently. It’s something I really enjoy doing, although I’ve not had a huge amount of time for it recently. I’ve made a decision that I’m going to try to grow my blog as much as possible. It’s going to be hard work, but I know that I can do it. I’ve had some successes with it in the past by working with a few brands and making a little bit of cash. I’m not saying it’s going to be a huge money spinner, but who knows? It’s all about content, writing content, and getting yourself out there on social media, and at networking events.

The other huge change this is year is that I’m going to start the Digital Mums Social Media Management Associate Programme in June. I found out about this course through blogging, being on Twitter and generally being introduced to the concept of flexible working, and work that works with childcare. In this day and age, the internet is a wonderful thing allowing us to work from home, and work around our children. The course is set-up to allow and promote just that. On the programme I’m doing I’ll be allocated my own client, and I will run a social campaign for them, so I will be effectively learning on the job. At the end of the 24-week course I will be armed with enough knowledge and skills to be able to go out and find my own clients. Like the blog, it’s going to be hard work, early mornings and late nights. But I am really hopeful that it will all pay off. I’ve only ever read positive feedback about this course, and I know and hope that I can make a success of it.

I would never have even heard about this course if it hadn’t been for my blog. Since starting my blog it has shown me how much I enjoy the social media side of advertising and promotion, which I would like to take forward as the next step in my career. Every thing that I have learnt being a Project Manager and working in advertising will no doubt help me in the future with this.

I’m really excited about what the rest of this year will be bring. I’ll be really sad to leave the world of advertising and agencies behind. But who knows that might not be forever. I’m also really grateful for my husband for pushing me to do this and to follow my dreams.

So here’s to the rest of 2017. I’m hopeful that it will be a brilliant year with lots of exciting change.

Have you ever made a brave decision to leave your current employment to pursue your goals and dreams? If so I would love to hear from you.
