5 Tips for Navigating Renovation Works With Children

In an ideal world, you would be able to move into a perfectly designed home for your specific needs. Sadly, this rarely happens, and having some foresight and vision when it comes to renovating a property can help you design your ideal home.

But if you have to live in your home while the work is being carried out and navigate family life, how can you make the right choices to reduce upheaval and minimise disruption in your life?

Time It Correctly

The last thing you want is to be fighting through building work and messy tasks while wrestling children in the morning to get them to school or nursery. When it comes to living through renovation works, you need to be as practical as possible, and this could mean delaying jobs until your schedule is more manageable, especially for the more complex parts. Aim for school holidays so you don’t have to rush out of the house each morning amid the chaos or work the construction around weekends or inset days if you can.

You might even want to book a holiday week or two to be out of the way and give your contractor’s space.

Hire A Builder Who Gets It

It is only reasonable to expect that you will still need to have your items around the house regardless of work being carried out. Choose a builder who understands this and is happy to help you move around the house while the work is being done or isn’t bothered by you still needing to keep your Buggy handy or have laundry out while they’re working. The game aims to compromise, and if your builder gets it, you are already winning.

Declutter

It goes without saying you will be living in a much smaller space than usual, so downsize or declutter as much as possible. This is the perfect time to get rid of those old baby clothes you have been hanging onto or going through the toy box etc. If this isn’t possible, then using storage space outside of the home can help you remove any non-essential items and keep them safe.

Lower Your Standards

By all means, you don’t need to live in a pigsty while work is being carried out but recognising that things won’t run as usual can help you to avoid the stress that comes with a change in living standards. And with all the best will in the world, you won’t be able to keep everything clean all the time. There will be a layer of dust seemingly everywhere once work commences. So relax, learn to live with chaos and do your best with what you have.

Plan For The Worst

Kids or no kids, planning for the worst or extended build times will remove the disappointment of work that runs over schedule. And if everything does go to plan, then it will feel even better.

When it comes to living through renovation work with children,  being as prepared as possible and creative with oy schedule will afford you the best chance of making it through this time as smoothly as possible.
