Mums in Business featuring Sweet Hearts Hair Design

This week on my Mums in Business series I am delighted to be interviewing Beth who set up her own business; Sweet Hearts Hair Design after learning how to braid her daughter’s hair whilst being a stay at home Mum. Since then the business has gone from strength to strength, winning awards, and allowing some much needed family time. Beth is also a huge advocate of flexible working and this motto runs throughout the company, where all staff are encouraged to use it. Here Beth shares her inspiring story with us, and I would love to get my hands on one of their tangle teasers……purely to remove the tangles from my own daughter’s hair.

Tell me a little bit about you, your background and Sweet Hearts Hair Design?

I was a stay at home Mum who learned how to braid my little girls hair by watching YouTube hair tutorials. From there I decided to make my own tutorials and to date this has amassed 2.5 million followers on social media. Prior to this I had no formal hairdressing or business training.

Following the success of the tutorials, I created a hair care range which consists of detangler sprays, an anti-nit detangler and most recently the Volumiser hot tool. I now run a team of 11 and I am set to release additional products this year including shampoos, conditioners and hair extension products. The products are sold worldwide in 56 countries.

What were your drivers and motivations for setting up Sweet Hearts Hair Design?

The business really has steered me. It started out as a passion that grew into the business it is now. However, the drive for the haircare range (which is the evolution of the business) was that people were contacting me, complaining that they couldn’t detangle thier children’s hair effectively. So the products really came about as a problem solver which resonated with all of my audience and has grown my presence.

How do you balance the business around family and childcare?

Sweet Hearts is run by my husband and I, and this allows for flexibility when balancing work and family life. It’s also knowing when to turn your business head off and just be mum. Running a business is 24/7 but I do really value separate quality family time. I also allow flexible working time which allows me to attend everything I need to, and flexible working is also followed through for the staff. We are very much a family orientated business.

Since setting up Sweet Hearts Hair Design what’s been your biggest success to date?

For me and from my family’s perspective, it’s allowed my husband (a high earner who used to work away for months at a time) to actually spend more time with the family as well as doing something that they all love. A huge achievement. Sweet Hearts has also been recognised in many respects including; silver play button from YouTube, a top hair hero of Glamour Mag and the new hot tool will also be featured in pro hair mag. There are also over 4000 5-star reviews for the best-selling detangler.

What’s your top tip for anyone who is thinking about setting up their own business?

Its got to be something that you’re really passionate about. It’s hard to sacrifice so much time for something, just for the money. You’ve got to be willing to take calculated risks and be brave with that leap to entrepreneurship. You need to have the ability to have a knock and disappointment, and be able to move on from it in a positive way.

For every success we’ve had, there have been multiple unsuccessful events. But if you’re passionate and surround yourself with the right team, you can be successful. It’s also important to allow your team the autonomy to do what they’re good at. ‘Stay in your lane’ is one of our office mottos. It doesn’t mean you can’t get involved with other things but we allow people to do what they enjoy.
