Mums in Business featuring The Honeymoon & Holiday Fixer

This week on my Mums in Business series I’m delighted to be featuring Britt who created The Honeymoon & Holiday Fixer where she designs and creates the perfect holiday for you. Britt set up the business after being threatened with redundancy whilst on her maternity leave. Ultimately this led Britt to look for opportunities that would better suit her and her family, and since working the business has rapidly grown faster than her own business goals.

Britt shares a simple story with us here in that we can actually do anything we put our mind to, and having children does not mean that our careers and ambitions are put on hold. In fact it’s more the opposite. With ambition, hard work and long hours your dream can become a reality. Keep on reading to read my interview with Britt….

Tell me a little bit about you, your background and The Honeymoon & Holiday Fixer

I have a corporate sales background and before starting my travel business had been working in that field for ten years.  My company, The Honeymoon & Holiday Fixer, specialises in honeymoons, destination weddings and luxury holidays and in December I will have been trading for two years.

What were your motivations for setting up your own business?

Back in 2015 I was threatened with redundancy when I was only two weeks into my maternity leave. Unfortunately this actually came to fruition when my daughter was only 8 months old. Having lost my faith and trust in the corporate world I decided to look at different franchise opportunities. Travel was the one that really stood out to me. Having traveled a lot as a single girl and then as a couple/family, it enabled me to set up a business in an industry I was extremely passionate about.

How do you balance the business around family and childcare?

It’s really hard as I have a very active and inquisitive 3-year-old, and my business is not 9-5. Finding the right balance has been difficult as the business has grown, however, I feel I am now starting to iron this out. My daughter, Ava, is at home with me on Mondays and Tuesdays and on these days I try to limit my work load as much as possible. She is fab and understands mummy is working with her customers sending them on lots of “pretty” holidays. I tend to work most evenings when my husband is home and also at weekends.

Since setting up the business what’s been your biggest success to date?

I set myself a target of 3 years to leave the franchise I was part of before branching out and establishing my own independent agency.  In fact, the business grew so quickly I managed to do this in just 20 months and on 3rd August, The Honeymoon & Holiday Fixer, was officially launched. I am now about to open a home working division and will have independent consultants working across the UK under The Holiday Fixer side of my business.  This was my 4-5-year goal but it actually has taken less than 2 years to get this stage. I find it mind blowing that things have taken off quite so quickly. It has not been easy, but hard work, dedication and believing in your dreams really does pay off.

What’s your top tip for Mums who are thinking about setting up their own business?

Do your research, make sure you know your market and be prepared to work hard.  It can be quite lonely, especially if you have been accustomed to working in a busy office with lots of people around you like I had. Working on my own is probably the hardest thing I have had to get used to. Most importantly, I would say,  is don’t give up on your dream. So, if being your own boss and running your own business is your dream, then go for it!
