This week for my Mums in Business series I am delighted to be interviewing Clare who set up Cherry Tree Vets with her husband in 2012. Since then the business has grown and the couple are soon to be opening a dedicated pet hospital. The couple work really well together as they both have their specialist areas, meaning there is no stepping on each other’s toes. Plus their children enjoy coming into the business at the weekend. Read on to find out how Clare and her husband have made a success of their business.
Tell me a little bit about you, your background and Cherry Tree Vets?
My name is Clare, and I own and run Cherry Tree Vets; a private vet practice with referral surgery, in a rural village setting near to our home in Marlow, Bucks. I have been successfully balancing business and family life since 2012 together with my husband Michael; a specialist veterinary surgeon. We also have two young children.
We will soon be opening our second business – Hamilton Specialist Referrals – a dedicated pet hospital for specialist surgical referrals, based in High Wycombe Bucks, in February 2018.
I started the practice from scratch in July 2012 with my husband and we make an excellent husband and wife team. Because we respect each other’s specialist areas and we are both animal lovers.
What were your drivers and motivations for setting up Cherry Tree Vets?
My main motivation was the desire to create a personal team with a caring culture and the freedom to influence every aspect of my working environment. I wanted to build something to be proud of and also have a retirement plan in place for the future.
How do you balance the business around family and childcare?
Balancing business and family life is tough – I work long hours and my job is unpredictable, as we often deal with last-minute emergencies. The key aspect that helps me juggle everything is that I can rely on an excellent team and fantastic childcare.
I only work three days per week and one in every three weekends. Sometimes the kids have time to pop into work with me and then it is all about making it fun for them.
Since setting up Cherry Tree Vets what’s been your biggest success to date?
Building the business to the point where I could take maternity leave and still get paid.
What’s your top tip for anyone who is thinking about setting up their own business?
Look after your staff – they are your business. And look after your clients – always have them in mind when you make a decision.
Thank you so much Clare for taking part in my series, it was lovely to interview you, and I wish you the best of luck in the future.
