How to save money as a blogger

You might think that blogging is a relatively cheap thing to do especially if you work from home. There are no travel costs, no expensive city lunches or beers after work, and no need to purchase a “work” wardrobe. However just because you work from home doesn’t mean that blogging is entirely a free hobby or job. There’s the technical kit to purchase including a laptop, monthly payments for apps and scheduling tools, your phone bill, and lets not forget the cakes and coffees in your local coffee shop when you feel like escaping the house. So here are a couple of ways you can save money as a blogger.

Look for the best deals on your laptop

You will need a computer and that is likely to be a laptop that you can easily transport around the home, and work on from the comfort of your bed. There are so many different brands, operating systems and requirements that you can choose from. It’s best that you research this well and look for a laptop that suits your needs, and this is where Latest Deals can help. You need to think about memory, the processor and ultimately storage. If you know that you’re going to be taking lots of photos to feature in your blog posts and on your social channels, then you’re going to need a laptop that has a lot of storage for these. If you know that you’re going to be doing a lot of video editing, then you need a laptop that has a processor that can cope with this.

Think about your phone bill

If you’re going to be out and about a lot needing access to the internet for posting and checking social media, you’re going to need a lot of data to do this. You may also need to tether your laptop to your mobile phone, so it’s best that you have a large enough data package as part of your mobile phone contract to do this. From my experience, it’s best to have at least 8GBs worth of data and there are plenty of contract deals available, so make sure you shop around on the comparison sites.

If you are currently in a phone contract make sure you change tariff when it ends as you’ll certainly be overpaying. Once the contract is out of the minimum term you have two choices, upgrade to a new handset and start again with a new contract. Or keep your handset and switch to a sim only plan. You can get some amazing sim only deals which include 8GB of data for around £15 a month at the time of writing and only tie you in for 12 months so that would certainly be the better choice financially.

Technology costs

There will ultimately be costs attached to your blog including hosting, scheduling tools, domain fees, and any software you need on your laptop. You can shop around for all of these, but it’s best to research them well and check that they are right for you. For example make sure that your host can accommodate the daily traffic you expect to receive on your blog, as one of the worst things that can happen is for your blog to fall over. Also test the scheduling tools by using the free trial before signing up to a monthly subscription. They are all different, and work differently for each social channel, so you may find one is better than another.

So those are my top tips on how to save money as a blogger. If you’ve already got the kit, prefer to post content on the fly, and not have your own domain, then blogging can be relatively cost free. However if you want to make it into a career you will need to pump your own cash into it, but as you can see there are many ways in which you can save money.

I would love to hear what your blogging costs are and how you save money on these?
